The Nāhelehele Distinguished Conservation Award honors individuals who have shown exceptional dedication to conserving Hawaii’s dry forest ecosystems. Only three individuals have been honored with this award so far.
William “Butch” Haase has been awarded and recognized for his passion and leadership in restoring Molokai’s dry forests. Butch has worked tirelessly to remove invasive species and restore native ecosystems, planting over 25,000 native Hawaiian plants at the Hui Ho’olana Native Botanical Garden.
As the Executive Director of the Molokai Land Trust, Butch has spearheaded extensive restoration efforts at the Mokio Preserve, collaborating with various organizations to protect native wildlife and transform the area into a thriving ecosystem. Butch’s remarkable contribution to conservation and his commitment to the well-being of Molokai have been widely acknowledged and appreciated.
